Communication flow diagrams are extensively used in the development of voice projects. They are now being used by numerous clients to successfully implement voice solutions to save their costs and give better customer service as well. The most important thing required for the construction of a voice project is to model a Communication flow diagram to jot down the entire process. A call flow diagram is an example of a communication flow diagram where the motive of the drawing is to identify the caller's goal and the results they expect. A communication flow diagram in the form of a call diagram can simplify otherwise extremely complex voice processes. The call flow diagram illustrates the distinct points in a Voice Site in which, the system offers a choice to the caller and concludes the action of the system in response to the selected choice. The points of the Voice Site are known as dialog states. Communication flow diagrams describe the Voice Site's structure by displaying the possible ways by which a caller can enter a state and the places they can go to, depending upon the selection they made. Of course, communication flow diagrams do not reveal any details of the contents in the state.

In a typical communication flow diagram such as a call diagram, the states are represented by bubbles and the arrows represent the switch from one state to the other. The bubble boxes can either be labelled with quotes or can even be empty. The bubbles with quoted labels represent the speech of the caller out of a big set while the ones without the quotes characterize a complete set.

Communication flow diagrams are extremely helpful in determining the sequence of the steps involved in the process and give a rough idea of the concept. Though adequate information related to the design is not provided in them, at least they are able to explain the entire structure as a whole.

Communication flow diagrams usually include a prompt list where it has number of saved voice recordings. The system plays these voice recordings when it comes to a particular state. A single state may contain one or more prompts but a main prompt is always present. When a call is made, the prompt list summarizes all texts in its dialogue. The prompts are then later represented by a sound file. These prompt lists are helpful in conveying the design content to the people requiring to review the same.

In order to build a successful voice application, it is very important to summarize the design process. The best way to achieve this is to collect conversation samples between the system and the caller, construct a communication flow diagram in the from of a call diagram, summarizing the process structure and finally, a proper prompt list with proper details of the text of each of the prompts.
